Do your research! You will be asked questions about your knowledge of the company and the industry in which they operate. Make sure you have familiarised yourself with the company website, you can also take a look at the LinkedIn profiles of the interviewers along with key people within the company. Review lasts year’s annual report, read trade press and relevant websites for the industry to ensure you are up to date with the latest projects, legislation and industry news.

Have the answers

Although you don’t know what you will be asked until you are in the interview there are a number of answers you can prepare and practice to the most common questions. These can include your strengths and weaknesses and why you are the best person for the job. It is important you have thoroughly read the job description, you will be asked questions around it. Prepare some examples of achievements and experience you have gained in the key responsibilities required.

Be ‘Suited and Booted’

It takes only a few seconds to make a first impression of which you have no second chance. It is important you look the part. You should be smartly dressed, your shoes polished, your clothes well-fitting and accessories appropriate.

Cool, Calm and Collected

If you have done all your preparation, including practicing the route and having everything ready the night before staying calm will be easier. Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time so you are calm when you arrive. Body language is important, try to be natural and open and do not fidget. Remember, the interviewers are normal people who could also be nervous!

Any questions?

You will always be asked if you have any questions at the end of an interview. It is worthwhile preparing at least 5 questions which will be around details of the job description and also to discover more about the culture and objectives of the business.
